The Arrogance! The Conceit! That we could take what we deem ours at whim. Have we learned nothing of Phaëton as he set his world aflame? Will there be a Zeus to stop us from doing the same? ~ Excerpt from a recovered political manuscript from Great Roma ~ |

A Note on Dates
The Common Era Calendar of Eridanus dates standard galactic years from the coronation of Thomas I Constantine, first emperor of Eridanus. The traditional "Old Calendar" calculated the current year by summing the regnal periods of each emperor following Thomas. Unfortunately, by the Second Reformation, it was clear that this practice had led to creeping inaccuracy in the calendar, and it was generally accepted that the Eridani Empire was actually much younger than the Old Calendar suggested.
In CE 38, Emperor Cuthbert I Godwinson commissioned the creation of the New Calendar from Caph Australis Imperial University. The Calendar Project staff recalculated the dates of most of Eridanus's key historical events, combining senate records and historical accounts to create a coherent new history. They also published and currently maintain the
Table of the Emperors of Eridanus, intended partly to illustrate the interaction between the Common Era dates and regnal years, and partly to reinforce the notion of Godwinson Continuity.
All dates on this page use the New Calendar dates, but some other pages may still use the Old Calendar.

The People's Constitution of Eridanus CE 14
The consitution is maintained by House Goratrix and is ratified by the senate. It's laws were formed by all the houses of Eridanus in a constitutional convention in which they could debate topics and voice their opinions. Violation of the constitution normally results in military action or embargoes. Although it is possible for a house to limit the time for an embargoe by giving back to the empire something of notable worth such as revealing a planet. (See People's Constitution of Eridanus)
***This Constitution was ratified on the 21st of Glory, 4 ROG.***
The Great Charter of Eridanus CE 0 - 8
*This charter has been repealed and is on display for historical purposes.
The Great Charter is written and maintained exclusively by House Constantine. Constantine has stated in many ways, implicitly and explicitly, through words and action, that the charter's purpose is to give the noble houses of Eridanus a general guide to avoid being penalized by the Imperial House. The charter exists in spirit only, and is open to fairly liberal interpretation by House Constantine. Rules and punishments are left ambiguous, usually being limited only to specific policies that are looked down upon by the empire. (See The Golden Rule)
Because the charter is so ambiguous, Constantine is also lenient when it comes to violating the charter. The Imperial House often shows significant amounts of mercy should a perpetrating house reverse or cease their illegal actions.
Senate Passed Laws
Senate Laws supersede and cement the guidelines of the Charter.

Origins of Eridanus
Eridanus history traces back over 20,000 years ago, and so accounts are varied and often exaggerated. Most of the Peoples of Eridanus have become less defined in the last few hundred years, as millenia of ethnic prejudice has begun to wear away, but separate traditions and histories do exist between cultures. All of these cultures, however, define the origin of the galaxy to come from the near-mythical planet of Eden.
By most historical accounts, the first empires of Ancient Eden to begin exploring deeper space was not the ruling Empire of the Time, Roma, but instead the marginalized and technologically innovate Quark Confederacy. Although the Broman Republic started dabbling in deep space exploration and colonization by the end of the 4th century of rule of the Great Empire of Roma, the true catalyst for expansion into the unknown was the "disappearance" of Eden, nearly 15,000 years ago. The then homeless factions of the Quark Confederacy was displaced from their early colonies by the militant Broman Republic and their allies of convenience, the Murcano Empire. While the Quarks began planet hopping, attempting to stay ahead of the Broman exploration, the "barbaric" Jins loaded the entirety of their remaining tribes into large colony ships and embarked north, in what would become the farthest and largest pilgrimage in history.
Eventually all the major powers of Eridanus allied together in one form or another, and together colonized all of known space. Countless feud wars took place, and the crown of the empire changed hands multiple times. The most recent feud war put aflame the entire galaxy - the strongest survivor of the war being the ruling house of Constantine, who abolished all legitimacy of houses and began anew the legitimization of noble houses. In the First Year in the reign of Emperor Thomas Constantine, the Imperial Guard was formed, composed of the strongest and best strategically placed houses that had existed during the wars prior to Constantine's succession. Some had fought in the war at Constantine's side (i.e. House Ventruz, House Nolea), and some had been careful observers, who had stayed out of the war and had capitalized on the sudden vacuum to rise to power (i.e. House Ganurath, House Goratrix). House Constantine would become the most powerful single house in written history.
